The Local 2544 Executive Board met with Governor Brewer for about an hour this morning. The meeting was very productive and Governor Brewer listened attentively to what we had to say. We are always heartened when someone like her wants to know what is really going on with border issues. We pointed out some serious flaws with CBP’s attempts to convince the American people that the border is secure. We also had the opportunity to relay personal experiences that we’ve had as Border Patrol agents, such as mandatory adherence to overly restrictive policies that often handcuff us and how the last round of amnesty (IRCA 1986) affected our jobs, illegal entries and overall border security.
We invited Governor Brewer to include us in any groups or committees that might be tasked with helping to certify that the border is “secure”. We believe that the American people deserve to hear from the agents who know what’s really going on. We also believe that the agents who are out doing the job of securing the border are the only ones who truly know whether it is secure. Governor Brewer was very receptive to our idea and her office will remain in contact with us.
We have met with many politicians over the years and Governor Brewer is one of the most genuinely concerned, attentive, respectful and appreciative people we’ve had the pleasure of dealing with. She is truly concerned about the citizens of Arizona and she is very honest and straightforward. We hope to meet with her again soon.
